Why are heat resistant gloves necessary?
When there is a potential that your hands will come into contact with something that is hot enough to burn you, wear gloves. Cases where gloves are necessary should be identified via the hazard assessment. In some circumstances, such as glassblowing, the requisite dexterity cannot be accomplished while wearing heavy gloves, yet the materials' characteristics allow handling them safely.
Look for blemishes, tears, and holes. The gloves must fit snugly without being so loose that they come off. Never use your lips to remove gloves by the fingers when doing so. When taking off a glove, avoid grabbing it by an area that has recently come into contact with a hot object. One appropriate technique is to partially remove one glove by pulling on the fingers, then pull off the other glove by the fingers while holding the partially removed glove in your hand. The glove can then be shook from the hand after being half removed. Another option is to wait until the gloves are completely cool before taking them off.
What is required and its restrictions
The gloves or mitts you select must be sufficient to shield you from the potential warmth of the objects you may touch. Remember that most gloves are designed for brief contact with warm objects. At temperatures up to 200oC, fabric gloves and oven mitts offer momentary protection. Work gloves made of Kevlar woven provide comparable protection but are less clumsy. At temperatures up to 900oC, Kevlar PBI (Polybenzimidazole) gloves are helpful.
Limitation:
Gloves won't allow prolonged contact with a hot object. Contact with materials hotter than the glove's maximum operating temperature may quickly deteriorate the glove and may result in severe burns. If exposed to a direct flame or an object that is much hotter than the glove's safe operating temperature, some types of gloves may catch fire. It costs a lot of money to purchase gloves designed for use in extremely hot environments. With gloves rated for the temperatures involved, there are some operations where the dexterity required cannot be accomplished.
