Nexprotec has started developing a new range of custom cut-resistant glove samples for an Australian PPE brand. The project is aimed at mining, construction and general industrial users who need a practical balance between Cut E protection, grip and everyday wearability.

 

Rather than selecting an existing glove based only on its cut rating, the development work began with the conditions in which the gloves are likely to be used. Sharp metal edges, abrasive building materials, tools and oily components all place different demands on the liner and palm coating.

The customer is preparing a private label PPE range for the Australian market and requested recommendations for both Cut D and Cut E gloves.

 

After reviewing the intended applications, Cut E was selected as one of the main development directions. This protection level is commonly considered for work involving sheet metal, fabrication, construction materials and other tasks where workers may come into contact with sharp edges.

 

The first sample program focuses on three practical requirements:

  • A cut-resistant liner designed to target EN 388 Cut Level E
  • Secure grip in dry and light-oil working conditions
  • Enough flexibility for regular tool handling and assembly work

 

Gloves with higher cut resistance can easily become thick or stiff if the yarn and knitting structure are not properly matched. For this reason, the sample is being evaluated as a complete glove rather than treating cut performance as the only target.

 

Cut-Resistant Liner Development

The sample uses a seamless knitted liner made from high-strength fibers and reinforcing yarns. The yarn composition is selected to increase resistance against sharp edges while keeping the glove flexible enough for extended wear.

Gauge, yarn tension and finger shape all affect how the finished glove feels. A liner may meet a high cut level but still be unsuitable for daily work if it restricts finger movement or creates pressure around the fingertips.

Palm Coating Options

Palm coating is being considered according to the working environment rather than appearance alone.

 

A lightweight PU coating provides good dexterity and is suitable for dry component handling, inspection and assembly. Foam nitrile offers a different balance, with improved grip where small amounts of oil may be present. Sandy nitrile can be considered for tougher environments where grip and abrasion resistance are higher priorities.

 

For mining, construction and industrial distribution programs, one liner may also be developed with more than one coating option. This allows a PPE brand to serve different job roles while maintaining a consistent product family.

The coating options under review include:

  • PU Palm Coating

A thin option for dry handling and work requiring precise finger control.

  • Foam Nitrile Coating

Suitable for general industrial use where flexibility and light-oil grip are both important.

  • Sandy Nitrile Coating

A more robust finish for demanding handling tasks and rough working surfaces.

 

The final coating will be selected after the customer compares grip, comfort and expected selling price.

 

Testing and Certification

The samples are being developed to target EN 388 Cut Level E. Final performance claims will be confirmed through third-party testing once the customer selects the preferred glove construction.

 

This approach avoids testing a model that may still change during sampling. Adjustments to the liner, coating or glove weight can affect the final EN 388 result, so certification is arranged against the confirmed production specification.

 

Testing may cover the relevant mechanical performance requirements under EN 388, including:

  • Abrasion resistance
  • Blade cut resistance
  • Tear resistance
  • Puncture resistance
  • TDM cut resistance

The confirmed test results can then be used for product marking, technical documents and private label packaging.
